A spirited fanfare full of surprises, Agora was commissioned for the Minnesota Symphonic Winds' 25th season. Named for ancient Greece's gathering places, it celebrates music's role in gathering people together.

This patriotic fanfare, commissioned by the Minnesota State Band, commemorates the 2017 reopening of the Minnesota State Capitol building and incorporates passages from the Minnesota state song, Hail! Minnesota, with original themes.


CHRISTINE'S LULLABY (2006)

Adapted from the original version for orchestra, Christine's Lullaby honors Christine Lee Hanson, the youngest victim of the September 11 terrorist attacks, with music of serenity and innocence leading to an emotional close.

 
THE EAGLE'S ISLAND (2001, revised 2007)

This colorful tone poem paints a musical picture of a remote island inhabited by a single eagle. Each section is given moments to shine, with emphasis given to alto saxophone, trumpet and percussion.

Commissioned by the Valley Winds of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Flourish for Valley Winds is a brief fanfare that celebrates the formation of a flourishing new ensemble through melodies that evoke the band's initials VW.


LAKE HARRIET BANDSHELL BLUES (2021)

This original composition in the blues/Dixieland style pays tribute to the beloved Lake Harriet Bandshell in Minneapolis and honors four late members of the Calhoun-Isles Dixieland Band.


MAGNIFICENT DESOLATION (1999)

Magnificent Desolation, composed to mark the 30th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, evokes the patriotism and drama of the first lunar landing, with a title taken from Buzz Aldrin's first words after stepping onto the moon.

This slow-tempo fanfare, commissioned by Carondelet Catholic School, calls to mind the many monuments in America's capital city. Ideal for high school or advanced elementary school bands, it includes basic syncopated rhythms and a few simple meter changes.

Remembrance, commissioned by Carl R. Schenker, Jr., and Susan Sherman Richardson, honors the many who served in the American Civil War, incorporating both original themes and Civil War-era melodies.

This exciting work, published by C. Alan Publications, is dedicated to the composer's music teachers Timothy Mahr, Peter Hamlin, Keith Liuzzi and Jeffrey Ruhnke, and reflects on childhood biking trips near Lanesboro, Minnesota, with music that represents a mile-long bike ride at a rapid pace.

Adapted for band from the original choral version, these two holiday-themed pieces were commissioned by the City of Lakes Community Band and Ann M. Verme in memory of Carol Voight. The movements, titled Snowflake Song and Wisdom, summon images of a gentle snowfall and the travels of the Three Wise Men.

This serene work, inspired by the new beginnings that arrive each spring, was first composed for strings and later adapted for full orchestra, and is dedicated to the Northern Symphony Orchestra.
